Game Development Services
Digitalmill creates games. One third to half our work over the last five years has been the creation of game designs, prototypes, and fully released games in the serious games field including projects for training, productivity, advertising, education, and health. During this time we've refined our game development services model into the following set of activities and processes:
Design Development and Refinement: Our primary work for clients has been developing overall design plans and documentation for their prospective game needs. This work can and often includes needs assessments, market assessments, and key strategic decisions clients must make to finalize development plans, design documents, and secure development resources including budget for their project(s).

Design Development & Review: Digitalmill will work with you to thoroughly scope out your game and project design. This multi-step process is designed not only to provide you a great game design but also to break the entire game and associated needs into a form that can be used for developer and partner selection, contract negotiations, testing, and milestone acceptance certification. We have a unique set of design processes we use to deliver one overall objective : that the client have a strong understanding of what they want developed, how they want it developed, and a vision for their project that sets them up to be a true partner to the subsequent development process.

As part of these services we are often asked to review other design and project plans. While we prefer to start from scratch with clients we do also offer design and project review services.

RFP Development and Developer Selection: Often clients want to have, or are required to have a competitive bidding process for their game development. We offer RFP development and developer evaluation services. This can run the gamut from full service to serving as an advisor to the RFP and bidding process. When competitive bidding is not necessary we can also do more specific developer selection support. This usually is a process where we work to understand the clients complete need and then work with our development community partners and select what we feel may be a best match based on availability, capability, geographic proximity, and overall experience. In all cases where we are hired by a project sponsor we accept no refferal fees whatsoever from participating developers. We also disclose all past professional relationships with participating developers during this process.

Development Management & Production: Once a design is set upon a game must be built. Digitalmill offers development management & production services playing the role of executive producer and consultant to the sponsoring party. This role is often vital to ensuring the sponsor gets exactly what they want from the development process and that there is an experienced hand guiding the work of third party developer(s) and service provider(s) for a given project. We help smooth the relationship, bring knowledge about redundant services in case work must be shifted elsewhere, and much more. Our goal in this role is also to bring about the best quality project on behalf of the sponsor and its development partners.
Our Guiding Philosophies

* Transparency as much as possible

* Strong visions for projects are critical but must also allow creative freedom for all involved

* Multiple voices during the design and testing process create creative tension that can benefit final developments

* Decoupling pre-production from production and production design affords a client a wide view of technical approaches and design choices that are critical to meeting budget and audience goals.

* Strong understanding of what the projects goals are and it's audience (not the game's design) is the critical first step toward a great serious game

Our Partners
Our design and development services depend on a "cast-of-thousands" of professional partners and development studios. These include independent designers who help guide our independent pre-production process and full-fledged development studios, many of whom specialize in certain types of games or technology platforms. We are constantly expanding these talent portfolios on behalf of our clients.
